It started with a jam session. Scott on bass, me (Dan) on guitar and vocals, Joe on piano, and Steve Merrill on drums. That was December of 2013. We just wanted to play Grateful Dead music with other people who would enjoy it. Steve was just visiting, so the next time we got together we had session drummer Scott Freeze. The jam was magical, and we figured we ought to bring it out to the public. The only thing was, I was trying to do the parts of two of my favorite guitar heroes, with vocals. We all agreed that we needed another guitarist who would be into it. Just that evening, Stanly Raquel changed his social media pic to this:

It was like a lightning bolt hit me in the forehead. Of course! I asked Stanly to join us and he not only joined us, but suggested the name Hardly Deadly. We went with it. We all lived near each other, and we got a lot of rehearsal time. Scott Freeze moved from the area, and Stanly recruited former bandmate Justin Anderson to join us on drums.

Sometimes we were lucky enough to also have Greg Skelton join us for double drum magic. What a lineup!

In the fall of 2016, Stanly and Justin decided to part from the band. (Stanly would later return to form Mudville Dead.) There were Hardly Deadly gigs scheduled all the way to the winter so I asked Kyle Hoffman and Cody Walker to fill in. We felt good about it after the fall shows, and decided to keep it going. Cody and Kyle came in completely ready to go, knowing more of the GD/JGB material than the rest of us, so we worked on the set until we had built it to over 100 songs, having fun all the way.

That wasn't the end of the personnel changes though. In 2017 Scott left and Jim Hall joined, and later that year Joe left and Mary McCarthy joined.

In 2019, Mary and Cody left, so we've been bringing in guest performers from other tribute acts. It has been great fun to work with them.

We will survive!
